Kit is growing, and so are the legal complexities of our business. We’re looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to help us navigate them with clarity, speed, and commercial savvy. You’ll serve as our first in-house legal hire, partnering closely with the executive team to lead commercial legal strategy and execution—especially around contracts, compliance, and M&A.
You’ll help shape the legal backbone of a fast-moving tech company with four revenue streams—including SaaS, digital commerce, and advertising—and a rapidly growing platform for creators. From structuring new monetization models to supporting our App Store expansion, you’ll be at the center of complex, cross-functional problems where product, business, and legal strategy meet—all in service of empowering the next generation of independent creators.
The team
You’ll report to our VP Operations, Ashley Alexander, and partner regularly with leaders across product, sales, finance, and people operations. We’ll continue to work with outside counsel on employment, immigration, tax, real estate, and litigation—but you’ll own our core legal work in-house, and know when and how to pull in expert help.
What you’ll do
- First week: Get up to speed on our business model, current goals, and product. Meet key internal stakeholders and our external counsel. Review our most common legal agreements and assess where we have risk, opportunity, or ambiguity.
- First month: Take ownership of our commercial contract review and documentation process. Begin partnering with Sales and Sponsorships to move faster without cutting corners. Get your arms around active data processing, AI, and other legal initiatives, and build a “what’s on deck” view of upcoming legal needs.
- First six months: Become the go-to partner for legal counsel across the business. Streamline legal workflows to reduce friction, increase confidence, and allow for more self-service. Help us apply legal frameworks practically, not just academically. Be a trusted partner to the executive team, balancing speed and rigor in service of our mission.
- First year: Help Kit operate at a higher level of legal maturity. Support due diligence and integration work on any acquisitions. Shape how we think about risk, compliance, and contracts as strategic enablers—not just boxes to check.
What will S.E.T. you up for success
Skills
- Deep expertise in commercial contracts, compliance, and M&A—this is where you’ll spend most of your time
- Working knowledge of U.S. and European data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), including familiarity with data controller vs. processor distinctions and how they shape vendor and product decisions
- Basic understanding of intellectual property law, especially related to brand, content, and software
- Clear communicator and trusted advisor—able to simplify complexity and help others make informed decisions
Experiences
- Experience as in-house counsel at a tech company or serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier firm that’s well-known for their work with startups (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley)
- J.D. from an accredited law school in the United States
- Active member in good standing of a State Bar Association
Traits
- Strategic thinker who sees legal as a lever, not a blocker
- Deeply curious and business-oriented—you start by understanding the goals, then explore the smartest paths to get there.
- Collaborative partner who can navigate conflict productively
- Deep belief that creator success is our success—you consider both Kit and our customers in every recommendation
- A “how might we” problem-solver who finds creative, business-aligned paths through legal challenges
What won’t set you up for success
- Needing a team of in-house peers or co-counsel to pressure-test every decision—you’ll be our sole in-house legal expert, with outside counsel available as needed
- A strongly risk-averse or “no-before-yes” mindset—we need you to help us move, not just stop us from tripping
- Thinking in a legal vacuum—if you’re not factoring in our goals, numbers, or creators, your advice won’t land
- Struggling with speed or ownership—if you prefer long timelines or wait to be told what to do, this won’t be the right environment. We move quickly and expect people to take initiative, spot problems, and drive solutions.
Working hours and location
We’re 100% remote with team members across the globe. For this role, we’re looking for someone located in the United States.
Compensation and benefits
Kit has standardized salaries based on position, no matter where you live. This role is an individual contributor level 4 ($227,000) or 5 ($251,000). Our other perks and benefits include:
