Upstart’s Talent Acquisition team is at the forefront of building high-performing, inclusive teams that drive innovation—and we’re evolving just as fast as the world around us. As we continue growing, we’re reimagining how recruiting can meet the moment—and shape the future.
We’re hiring an Engineering Recruiting Manager who’s not just a strong leader, but also a builder—someone who thrives at the intersection of people, process, and technology. You’ll lead a team of 8 full-cycle technical recruiters and partner closely with engineering and product leaders to scale thoughtfully, strategically, and with a long-term view in mind.
This role is for someone who’s not afraid to roll up their sleeves, has deep experience in technical recruiting (bonus points if you’ve sourced or owned exec-level searches), and is excited about what’s possible when recruiting evolves alongside AI and the future of work.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Lead, coach, and empower a high-performing team of full-cycle recruiters hiring across a range of engineering disciplines and seniority levels.
- Own the strategy, roadmap, and execution of technical recruiting initiatives—ensuring they align with business needs today while laying the groundwork for what comes next.
- Act as a hands-on recruiting leader, stepping into key searches when needed and modeling the kind of recruiting craft that helps your team grow in turn.
- Act as a trusted partner to engineering and product leaders by offering strategic insights, talent market expertise, and regular updates on pipeline health
- Design and evolve scalable recruiting processes that prioritize candidate experience and drive quality, speed, and efficiency—without sacrificing humanity.
- Champion the adoption of smart tools and data to unlock better decision-making, optimize workflows, and build more predictive hiring systems—especially as AI reshapes how we work.
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
- 7+ years of experience in talent acquisition or recruiting, including proven success building and managing recruiting teams (sourcing, RecOps, or full-lifecycle)
- Strong track record as a full lifecycle technical recruiter, with expertise across various recruiting disciplines
- Demonstrated ability to align recruiting strategy with business goals and lead teams through ambiguity and change
- Skilled in stakeholder management and confidence engaging with senior technical leaders
- Familiarity with applicant tracking systems and other modern talent acquisition tools
- Preferred qualifications:
- Experience supporting a mix of volume hiring and hard-to-fill roles
- Strategic mindset with the ability to balance short-term hiring needs with long-term team-building goals
- Deep commitment to recruiter development and performance coaching
- Comfort working in a high-growth, fast-paced environment with evolving priorities.
- Position Location – This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, CA, and Columbus, OH
- Time Zone Requirements – This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.
- Travel Requirements – As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; the Talent Acquisition team meets quarterly for 2-3 consecutive days at a time.
