The System Product Designer supports the Principal System Designer in maintaining and growing the company’s design system. In this role, you will play a hands-on part in documenting components, assisting with design tokenization, and ensuring consistency across design and development teams. As a System Product Designer, you will work closely with the Principal System Designer, developers, and designers to maintain component libraries, enhance documentation, and implement updates that streamline workflows.
Core Responsibilities
- Support the Principal System Designer in maintaining the design system’s roadmap, focusing on short-term updates and tactical improvements.
- Assist in creating and maintaining design tokens for typography, colors, spacing, and other UI elements.
- Contribute to building and updating the component library, ensuring design and development specifications are clear and accessible.
- Document usage guidelines, interaction rules, and visual examples for all components and patterns.
- Partner with developers to test components for consistency between design and code, reporting any gaps or issues.
- Update and audit design documentation to ensure accuracy and usability for all stakeholders.
- Assist in conducting user testing and gathering feedback on the design system components.
- Stay current with best practices in design systems, contributing new ideas and solutions to improve efficiency.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, to ensure alignment between the design system and product goals.
- Consult with designers on design system needs and guidance.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Design, Interaction Design, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
- 1-2 years of experience working on a design system.
- Familiarity with design tools such as Figma (or similar platforms).
- Basic understanding of design tokenization and its role in maintaining consistency across products.
- Excellent attention to detail, with strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and take direction from senior team members.
- Basic understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS) and their relationship with design systems.
- Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience supporting a design system or contributing to a component library.
- Familiarity with tools like Storybook or similar component documentation platforms.
- Interest in accessibility and inclusive design practices.
- Understanding of Agile workflows.
Special Work Conditions
- Sedentary – Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Some positions may entail exerting up to 15 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, or pull.
