IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.
We are looking for a Staff Quantum System Simulation Engineer. As a Staff Simulation Engineer, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. In this role, you will primarily develop and implement methods to perform simulations of quantum systems and architectures and evaluate their performance. You will work with the engineering team to gather requirements, develop necessary methods to integrate noise models connecting different tools in the simulation stack of the current and next generation quantum systems and integrate tools with the rest of the software stack. You will also help build, maintain and test software infrastructure necessary to enable simulations at scale and improve the overall code quality of existing libraries.
Responsibilities:
- Perform quantum architecture and system performance simulations
- Create documentation, gather requirements and write maintainable code following best practices to enable system performance and architecture simulations
- Integrate different simulation softwares in the simulation stack
- Automate, test and parallelize simulation workflow
- Improve efficiency and code quality of overall simulation tools
- Document and communicate software development activities to the engineering team
- Maintain and improve build process, version control and CI/CD pipeline
You’d be a good fit with:
- PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in simulations of quantum systems and architectures
- Python programming for scientific computing
You’d be a great fit with:
- 5+ years of experience in a professional setting
- Experience with open quantum systems and quantum error correction/mitigation algorithms
- Experience with many-body physics and algorithms, matrix product state and tensor network methods
- Experience developing software and/or implementing algorithms to enable physics simulations
- Experience writing glue code to connect and automate simulations involving multiple programming languages
- Experience with parallel programming in Python/C++
- Experience with automating workflows in high-performance computing environments, CI/CD and version control
