IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

The salary range for this position is $175,954 – $230,369.

We are looking for an expert on quantum error mitigation to work on the development and implementation of error mitigation schemes for our systems. As a Senior Staff Theorist on the systems architecture team you’ll be part of a cross functional group leading IonQ’s  journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

The development of quantum error mitigation will lead to novel error mitigation methods that fit within IonQ’s technology roadmap and improve near-term and long-term device performance. You will be working across teams and working across the quantum computing stack to ensure that these methods can be implemented and are effective in improving device performance. In particular you will work closely with the rest of the System Architecture and Performance group as well as the applications, compiler and quantum control systems teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop novel error mitigation techniques
  • Study existing error mitigation techniques and asses how/if they fit within IonQ’s technology and IonQ’s roadmap
  • Work with the applications team to improve algorithm performance on current and near-future devices
  • Use trade studies to prioritize the development and deployment of different error mitigation techniques
  • Support architecture work for the design of next generation quantum computers
  • Support ongoing experimental work

You’d be a good fit with:

  • A PhD in an area related to quantum computation and/or post-doctoral work in an area related to quantum error mitigation
  • At least 3 years of experience working on quantum error correction/error mitigation or noise characterization
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team

You’d be a great fit with:

  • 10+ years of experience in quantum computation
  • 5+ years of experience working on quantum error correction and or error mitigation
  • 3+ years of experience outside of an academic setting
  • A track record of scientific publications and/or patents related to quantum computing
  • Experience in quantum compilation
  • Great coding skills and experience delivering work to software engineers
  • A good understanding of quantum applications
  • Experience working directly with a quantum computer close to the hardware level
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills
