DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Player Development department is dedicated to fostering the comprehensive growth of our minor league players. Our mission is to excel in optimizing talent and skill development while aligning with player and team objectives. Our approach involves the creation of world class player programs and efficiently scaling them across our player pool. Collaborating closely with baseball analytics, performance, and medical, we establish effective frameworks for experimentation and learning. Additionally, we work closely with Amateur Scouting, International Scouting, and Pro Scouting to ensure seamless player transitions into the Red Sox organization.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW:
This roving position will serve a leadership role in the Boston Red Sox Pitching Department and will primarily be focused on implementation of the Red Sox pitching philosophy throughout the minor leagues. This includes implementing, and executing pitching philosophies, processes, and programming across all levels of the minor league organization.  This includes, but is not limited to, scaling programming across the Red Sox pitcher pool, creating well established systems, and forming effective frameworks for experimentation and learning in the pursuit of world class player and staff development.  Additionally, this position will also focus on the intersection of Research & Development, Skill Acquisition, Analytics, Sport Science, S&C, and Biomechanics, and ensure that programming is evidence-based and effective in the pursuit of building a pitching operation built to produce championship caliber results at the Major League level while sustainably building depth at the minor league level.
 
This role will be responsible for educating players and coaches on relevant information and technology, while following the Boston Red Sox pitching philosophy and always supporting and promoting the tenets of the department. The ideal candidate must be inquisitive, intellectually curious, data-driven, open minded, and must possess strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
This position is based full time in Fort Myers, FL. Candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to Fort Myers, FL. Travel to minor league affiliates is required and will occur approximately 10-15 days per month during the Major and Minor league seasons.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • With guidance from Director, Pitching, implementation of the Red Sox Pitching Philosophy while helping develop individual goals for each player and to develop processes (in-season and off-season) to help each player achieve those goals.
  • Collaborate with Baseball Research & Development to determine validated, data-led goals and usage plans for individual pitchers.
  • Implement individualized pitch development, usage, grip and delivery goals and ensure they are being consistently executed, tracked, and improved upon.
  • Implement and track command development and program implementation to ensure consistent development on specific pitch/overall command and control skills.
  • Oversee individual delivery development as it relates to pitch optimization and quality.
  • Collaborate with the Performance group – Strength & Conditioning, Medical, Sports Science, and Biomechanics to optimize current movement pattern and optimize for improvements as it relates to the pitcher’s overall development.
  • Work with the Director, Pitching to create educational materials and experiences for minor league coaches, and staff with regards to understanding and implementing pitch data, biomechanics and technology.
  • Communicate regularly with covered affiliate pitching coaches, Director, Pitching to closely track the development progress and transitions of pitchers.
  • Oversee implementation of pitching related technology at covered affiliates and utilize player and coach feedback tools including After Action Reviews (AAR’s) and Bullpen Reports to maximize development .
  • Work with the Director, Pitching to oversee activation, throwing programs (in-season and off-season), and overall pitcher programming.
  • Additional duties as assigned by Director, Player Development and Director, Pitching
  • Complete in-depth post affiliate visitation reports and actively participate in all pitching communication channels.

COMPETENCIES

  • Able to think objectively and critically to solve problems.
  • Experience developing programming and closely monitoring progress towards organizationally defined KPI’s.
  • Technical ability to interact deeply with analytics and predictive modeling groups to advise and QC model outputs.
  • Familiar with the development of coaching manuals and player curriculum and able to tailor programming to meet organizational goals.
