GitHub is changing the way the world builds software and we want you to help build and secure GitHub. We’re looking for an experienced manager to help lead a vibrant and geographically distributed group of engineers and analysts as they protect the home of all developers. This role is not about dictating or managing a team member’s work directly, but rather guiding and serving to ensure the happiness and productivity of the entire team. The primary goal of this job is to enable each team to do the best work of their lives.

As a Manager, you will lead both machine learning engineering and analyst individual contributors in key roles across our Platform Health teams. At GitHub, Platform Health’s mission is to ensure GitHub’s platform safety through fighting malware, spam and fraud, monitoring for fake accounts, countering inauthentic content, battling crypto mining, and other core areas. You will advocate for your teams and continue to hire a diverse group of incredibly talented people. You will be involved in a range of activities across the team including guiding technical decisions and setting the standard for ensuring abuse and fraud are countered, content is moderated, and users are kept safe.

If you have a foundation in information security, anti-abuse work, online platform trust and safety issues, and enjoy supporting humans across all experience levels from entry-level associates to seasoned senior contributors, and fancy helping build a world class security team, then this might be the gig for you.

  • Serving as a great people leader for the team, meeting with members 1-1 on a regular basis, giving guided performance feedback, and helping individuals plan and execute on their career development objectives.

  • Serving as the hiring manager for the team to bring in new analysts and machine learning engineers who not only complement the existing team’s skills, but who also have new perspectives, ideas, and experiences.

  • Driving clarity and managing projects across multiple teams, fostering clear communication, understanding, and process improvements.

  • Developing and maintaining operations to detect, prevent and disrupt violation of GitHub’s Terms of Service.

  • Supporting GitHub to enhance our AI capabilities to prevent fraud and abuse and develop responsible AI.

  • Communicating the impact of abuse, the impact of our moderation, gaps in our detections, safety risks, and other threats to GitHub to our executive leadership team.

  • Building partnerships throughout the company, with our parent company Microsoft, and across industry peers to share knowledge and best practices.

  • Managing team budgets, external consultants, and service provider contracts.

Required Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of overall information security or related experience.
  • 2+ years of personnel management of small to medium sized analysis or data science teams.
  • 5+ years of trust and safety or national security experience focused on malware, fraud, online safety or abuse mitigation.
  • Experience working on projects where stakeholders have competing aims with a proven ability to meet objectives.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working as a remote employee, and managing distributed teams.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a strong sense of empathy and the ability to advocate for your team.
  • Demonstrated data science, machine learning and advanced analysis with a solid understanding of large-scale web applications.
  • Experience customizing team processes for maximum productivity and minimal burnout.
