The Head of Global Tax operates as a highly visible, cross-functional, collaborative leader; partnering with Accounting, Finance, Legal, and external consultants, etc. with respect to everything tax related to support the business’ rapid growth and expansion.
As a transformative leader in a key strategic role, the Head of Global Tax oversees Coursera’s global tax strategy including initiating and implementing domestic and international tax strategies and coordinating with external consultants in preparation of quarterly and annual income tax provisions pursuant to ASC 740. Additionally, the incumbent manages the day-to-day operational, technical tax, and compliance activities for the organization, including designing tax processes, leading or supporting cross-functional initiatives, and ensuring key tax deadlines.
Reporting to the VP, Chief Accounting Officer, the Head of Global Tax will be pivotal in navigating the complexities of the global tax landscape, ensuring excellence in compliance and fostering innovation within the team.
Responsibilities
- Lead Coursera’s strategic tax planning and high-value tax strategies both domestically and internationally, driving tax position optimization aligned with Coursera’s global mission and business strategy
- Lead a broad spectrum of tax compliance activities, from federal and state to international filings, while enhancing processes for efficiency and scalability
- Provide annual updates on tax strategy to Audit Committee
- Lead tax due diligence and integration efforts for M&A targets
- Act as a tax liaison, influencing and educating business units on tax matters, driving collaborative initiatives that bridge tax strategy with market execution
- Ensure timely and accurate income tax provision reporting under ASC 740
- Oversee federal, state, and foreign income tax compliance including indirect reporting such as GST/VAT and SUT
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners, delivering tax insights and guidance to support business initiatives and market growth
- Maintain up-to-date expertise in tax regulations, advising on the impact of legislative changes and strategic adjustments necessary to strengthen Coursera’s tax position
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Tax, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or related field
- 12+ years of progressive experience in public accounting and/or a corporate tax department, with broad experience in corporate income tax and indirect tax, including compliance and tax accounting
- Demonstrated expertise in international tax planning and the deployment of tax strategies that support a growing global business
- Deep knowledge of international tax planning and income tax provision
- Prior success in developing a high performing international tax team
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA license or Master’s degree in Tax
- Experience with SaaS companies
- Tax research experience
- Experience with indirect taxes such as VAT, GST and/or SUT
