Yelp is looking for a laudable litigator who will also collaboratively advise product, engineering, and design teams at every phase of product development. Yelp is a profitable, publicly-traded company with thousands of employees across the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Germany, and a dynamic and influential team of lawyers supporting the company’s mission to connect consumers with great local businesses.
This is a full-time remote position that can be based anywhere in the U.S., though we have large offices across the country at your disposal if you are local to them (e.g., San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Phoenix, Washington D.C.). Yelp’s legal team currently has lawyers in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, Seattle, Austin, and Southern California.

Where You Come In:

  • Working with Yelp’s in-house and outside litigators, you’ll own Yelp’s responses to a wide variety of matters worldwide, often on novel legal issues of privacy, free speech, and intellectual property
  • Develop processes to ensure awareness of ongoing product initiatives and provide legal input to development teams launching and iterating product features directed at businesses and consumers
  • Work with other members of Yelp’s legal team to create training and other support materials to educate non-lawyers about legal rules relevant to product development
  • Keep tabs on laws and regulations that impact Yelp’s business worldwide
  • The best candidates will likely have great litigation experience, with an interest in trying their hand at more. They will have substantial experience running their own projects rather than playing a supporting role or doing directed work. They are proactive, entrepreneurial, efficient, and motivated to shape their own roles. They have a keen sense of how they can apply their knowledge and experience to Yelp, but are ready, willing, and able to tackle unfamiliar work
  • As is true of all legal team members, successful candidates will also be interested in and capable of tackling new areas of law and projects for which they may not be directly responsible, allowing them to grow and develop while helping their colleagues at the same time

What it Takes to Succeed:

  • J.D., top law school with bar admission in good standing
  • 4+ years’ litigation experience (or a combination of litigation and product counseling)
  • Experience directly providing legal counsel to product or engineering employees is a plus
  • Prior in-house experience is a big plus
  • Experience working cross-functionally with multiple teams of stakeholders from many different teams
  • Strong work ethic and proven professionalism
  • Trustworthy, optimistic attitude with a willingness to roll up your sleeves
  • Excellent balance of legal and business judgment, with an ability to think creatively about complex issues without clear precedent
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills with a rigorous devotion to detail and organization

The Ideal Candidate:

  • The ideal candidates, however, are more than the bullet points above. They enjoy working with non-lawyers, like designers and engineers, and smile at the challenges and quirks that invariably make it so difficult to scale this kind of work in a fast-paced environment. They can turn legislative legalese and regulatory vagaries into practical guidance that can be easily operationalized. They like to work independently, are good at prioritizing a wide range of projects with a wide variety of people, and are comfortable advising senior business leaders
  • Although Yelp has grown substantially from its early days, the company prides itself on maintaining a startup culture and feel.  We are looking for someone with an impressive legal background who shares our commitment to providing innovative legal solutions
