About the Role
As part of the Growth & Trust Squad within the Growth and Scale group, this Senior Backend Software Engineering role is pivotal in driving initiatives that directly contribute to our company’s strategic objectives. Our team is responsible for crafting experiences that engage and delight users, driving them from first signup to retained customer. We partner with support, sales, and marketing to make this process self-serve to scale our business. Simply put, we get users setup, successful, and spreading the word as we support our company growth goals.
Some of the areas you’ll support:
- Activation: Designing and building the new-user experience that connects them to key aspects of the product and helps them become power users.
- Onboarding & Porting: Building a smooth and clear onboarding process that will help our customers quickly discover that OpenPhone is right for them.
- Compliance requirements: Registering for compliance products could be confusing + overwhelming for customers. You will help design and build an experience that is nothing like going to your virtual DMV.
Your contributions will directly impact our ability to grow and scale as a company. As a Senior Backend Engineer at OpenPhone, you will spend the majority of your time coding, architecting, and owning moderate to complex components. Beyond your technical work, you’ll take on a key role in mentoring and leveling up your teammates, fostering their growth and strengthening the team’s technical capabilities. Additionally, you will lead a small team or spearhead impactful projects, providing technical guidance, conducting code reviews, and delivering on small to medium-sized projects end-to-end. Your ability to influence, guide, and collaborate with the team will be essential in shaping both technical direction and team dynamics.
Technical stack and tools:
- Our backend is built on Node using Typescript.
- We use Kubernetes on AWS to orchestrate our infrastructure setup and deployment.
- The overall architecture is event-driven microservices with RabbitMQ at the center of it.
- We use a variety of databases for different purposes: Postgres, Mongo, Elastic, and Redis.
- Observability Tools: Datadog
- Other Tools: Figma, Linear, Notion, and Slack
About you:
- Strong experience with Typescript, or experience with object-oriented languages such as Java or C# and Javascript/Node.
- Strong experience with observability tools, including metrics, structured logging, and distributed tracing
- You have experience mentoring teammates, helping them grow their technical and collaboration skills.
- You’ve successfully taken ownership of team projects, driving them forward with direction and influence.
- You take ownership of your work and understand the importance of communication. You hold yourself to a high standard and help empower others to do the same.
- You are intentional about how your work impacts customers, the community, and each other. You practice empathy, generosity, and thoughtfulness as you evaluate tradeoffs in pursuit of the best solution.
- You are curious. You better seek to understand the ‘why’ behind things, so that you can better plan and build the ‘how’. You support your teammates and customers through the continuous pursuit of knowledge. You’re a lifelong learner.
- Your code is a pleasure for your teammates to read and understand and you strive to ensure it is readable, testable, and maintainable.. When working in the codebase, you leave things better than how you found them.
Compensation
This position’s annual base salary range is $197,000 – $220,000 CAD, plus equity and benefits.
The range displayed reflects the target for new hire salaries, and within this range, individual pay is determined by your skills and experience, as well as relevant education. Your recruiter can share more and answer questions about the specific salary range during the hiring process.
Salary is just one component of OpenPhone’s total compensation package. Your total rewards package will include equity, extensive medical coverage, a monthly lifestyle stipend, and a flexible PTO policy.
