What’s the role?
Thanks to our rapid growth, we have an amazing opportunity for a Science Press Officer to join our team at ZOE. Reporting to the Head of Science Communications, and working closely with the Head of UK Communications and UK PR Manager, you will be responsible for advising on comms, handling reactive issues and maintaining ZOE’s reputation amongst UK press. Whilst the role is mostly based on reactive communications, you will work on proactive SciComms to ensure we’re at  the forefront of consumer minds when it comes to best-in-class Science. ZOE’s science communications has a big impact on national and international media and we are positioned to be industry leaders with scientific rigour at the core of what we do.
You’ll focus on communicating our science, our stance on nutrition and bringing ZOE’s science to life via the press. You will take the lead on drafting compelling written materials that lead with our science. In collaboration with the senior Comms team and Science team, you’ll be responsible for delivering best-in-class science communications for a category leader in health and wellbeing, building brand awareness through UK media.
About the team
The ZOE PR & Science Communications team executes and delivers on all aspects of the PR and Communications for the business to help position ZOE as a category leader in health, nutrition and science. As a team, we work smarter, not harder, to deliver impactful results for ZOE. The team collaborates closely with the wider marketing team and partners with an external agency to support us in bringing stories to life.The ZOE press office receives numerous national print and digital requests a week, and the team works closely with top consumer titles on a weekly basis. ZOE’s scientists regularly release novel science, giving the team lots of amazing stories to pitch to our media contacts, which sets us apart from any other health brands.

Proactive Communications

  • Translate ZOE’s science into public-facing communications.
  • Draft science messaging (FAQs, short form) for ZOE research, new products etc.
  • Draft press releases for abstracts and full papers.
  • Support Head of SciComms on upcoming science campaigns including press outreach.
  • Support delivering on scientific spokesperson strategy alongside Comms team.
  • Support on science comms briefing docs for our spokespeople.
  • Has a strong understanding of science media landscape and solid relationships with science reporters to drive science press for the brand and our spokespeople.

Issues & reputation management

  • Handles all science-related reactive / inbound comms.
  • Produce initial ‘holding statements’ and key Q&As to clarify facts.
  • Produce plans for potential crises, covering likely scenarios and responses.
  • Work closely with wider Communications team to address potential longer-term and reputation-recovery campaigns.
  • Have a proactive approach to anticipating possible criticism and risk, and preparing in advance.
  • Work at pace to get relevant information to draft effective responses in the context of wider business needs.
  • Deal with journalists confidently and helpfully, via email or phone – simply translating ZOE’s complex science.
  • Evaluate news coverage and share learnings with comms team and wider stakeholders to understand and pre-empt the direction of future stories.
  • Translate potential problems to wider teams including social media and advertising trends.
  • Drive science-based press FAQ alongside wider team.

Science Review

  • Review FAQs and gold standard answers to contentious science issues for coaching team.
  • Review flagged/risky podcasts, advertising and social content.
  • Support with reviewing content for product team.
  • Act as liaison with Head of SciComms to understand legal guardrails in our comms and act as a guardian for the legal considerations.

We think you’ll be a great fit if you have…

  • Demonstrable experience in issues management and proactive comms.
  • A background in Science (eg. Nutrition Science, Medical Science, Biomedical Science).
  • Experience writing scientific press releases.
  • Ability to work closely with a scientific team and translate their work into consumer-friendly press pieces.
  • A network of journalists within the Science space.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing start-up environment.
